‘RADIO SLAVE’

prolific BRITISH electronic producer, MATT EDWARDS IS AN International DJ AND TASTE MAKER famed for his ENDURING CONTRIBUTION TO underground electronic MUSIC.

A champion of minimal, techno and house to his hip-hop and electro edits across to Italo disco and exotica. Matt Edwards is most known under his ‘Radio Slave’ moniker. His Rekids label commands huge respect with the label catalogue alone surpassing two hundred releases, responsible for breaking countless artists and with hundreds of releases to his own name. I have known and been working with Matt for almost twenty years now. Initially meeting in Brighton via my first studio, a couple of streets away from where he lived. We soon became friends and fortuitously with the same agent Andrew Curley at ITB saw us bumping heads on the festival and club circuit around the world from Japan to Brazil, Australia to America.

Matt first remixed one of my Cagedbaby singles ‘Hello There’ back in 2005 with a goosebump inducing techno take that saw Sven Vath amongst others playing as a staple in their sets, now often hailed as a classic.

‘King of MinimaL’

is what I still call Matt, due to how precise he is in his productions. As well as possibly my favourite DJ (don’t tell him) and thousands of headline shows under his belt, his often twelve or fifteen minute long tracks flow hypnotically, a trademark sound crafted with the sole purpose of the discerning clubber in mind.

After our hit remix of Mousse T’s classic ‘Horny’ together we started to pair up more as a remix duo under ‘Last Communication’, with a string of tracks for artists such as The Howling, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Francesco Tristano, Daniel Melingo for Loco Dice’s ‘Desolat’ and the award winning remix for Aphrohead’s track ‘Lets Prance’ on Crosstown Rebels. For Matts ‘Quiet Village’ or ‘Maxxi and Zeus’ monikers he would call me to play rhodes, piano or classic synths for a track before coming to the studio in France to record some of his productions together for Radio Slave or another of his many pseudonyms ‘SRVD’ or to sometimes help develop a new artist on the label.

In 2013 we paired up as ‘Matom‘, working in Berlin on an ambient dub project signing an album to Carl Craigs ‘Planet 24’ imprint after an initial commission to Matt by the Red Bull Music Academy to create an hour of music to celebrate the iconic ‘Hansa’ recording studios in Kreuzberg. Performing this live in Warsaw alongside the late Manuel Gottsching led to more shows at Miami Music Week and onto the hallowed Berghain Kantine for his ‘Pyramids on Mars’ showcase another of Matts many imprints.

We continue to this day to session together especially on piano house, to kosmiche synth led tales, to pure electro and classic disco tracks often championed by Pete Tong, Danny Howard and DJs across the globe right up to the latest offering from Matt in Radio Slave’s latest 2023 album.

Tom is one of the most talented people in the business and has been a creative, reliable and solid force for the last 20 years in my music as friend, collaborator, producer, keyboardist to mix down engineer.

Radio Slave … 2023

Shows a slightly different hand to Matts ever evolving work. Maybe the tempo has come down, more melodic, still long form, still trademark but matured like a fine Cognac. For the past year we continued to work together combining deep production sessions here at the Well House Studio and in remote sessions. I’m happy to have contributed towards Matt’s upcoming Radio Slave album of which the first two masterclass singles are already released on his imprint Rekids.
